Rebecca Campbell to Headline Gil’s Hootenanny 2025

Musician, activist, song writer and song interpreter extraordinaire Rebecca Campbell will headline the 16th Annual Gil’s Hootenanny on Wednesday, April 30th at the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa.

Rebecca is a magical performer who creates music that is “emotionally rooted”, “honest” and “interactive”. She honed her musical artistry in Ottawa in the 1980s and 90s, before moving to Toronto to expand her creative horizons. She has been performing and collaborating with a wide range of individuals and groups in large and small venues for over three decades. She is a performer who finds “solace and energy in activism” and she works to lay bare “the inequities and injustices of the world we live in”. Gil’s Hootenanny is delighted to welcome Rebecca back to Ottawa to bring the audience together to “speak truth to power”.

Gil’s Hootenanny, first presented in 2010, is inspired by the legacy of Gil Levine, who spent his life working for social justice and was the founding Director of Research at the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). Gil was a lover of folk music and an enthusiastic supporter of folk musicians. He and his wife Helen hosted hootenannies and May Day celebrations at their home for decades.

Over the years, Gil’s Hootenanny has seen increasingly larger audiences who join the headliner and other featured artists in singing along with new and traditional songs of hope and protest.

Gil’s Hootenanny will take place at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, April 30th (May Day Eve) at the campus of the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa, 30 Cleary Avenue. The venue is accessible, has ample parking and is serviced by OC Transpo.

Tickets for Gil’s Hootenanny will be $20. Kids are welcome to attend free of charge.
